The Simpsons has been picked up for another season, Fox confirmed on Oct. 4.

This will be the shows 26th season. The premiere of Season 25 of The Simpsons, which aired Sept. 29, spoofed Homeland.

The first episode of this season, Homerland, guest starred Kristen Wiig (BridesmaidsSNL) as Annie, an FBI agent, who worked with Lisa to investigate Homer's suspicious activities after Homer returns from a nuclear power plant operating convention. According to the synopsis of the episode, Homer "returns a changed man" after the convention.

In other Simpsons related news, it was announced that a major character will be killed off this season. In a conference call with reporters, the show's executive producer, Al Jean, revealed the news:

"We're actually working on a script where a character will pass away," Jean said. "I'll give a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won't say who it is."

Almost every member of the core ensemble of voice-over performers has won an Emmy, including Dan Castellaneta (Homer, Barney, Krusty), Julie Kavner (Marge, Patty, Selma), Hank Azaria (Apu, practically everyone else on the show), Nancy Cartwright (Bart), and Yeardley Smith (Lisa).

The premiere beat the ratings for Family Guy and New Girl last week.

The 25th season of The Simpsons was confirmed on Oct. 7 of 2011. Al Jean, the executive producer of the show, has said that this season will kick start their goal to complete thirty seasons by the end of this decade.

The Simpsons airs on Sundays at 8 p.m. E.T. on Fox.
