American Horror Story is essentially built on creating shocking, horrifying moments for the audience, and the show has consistently delivered crazy moments since season 1.

Season 1 introduced the audience to the crazy world of American Horror Story, in which death, hauntings and evil spirits were the norm. There were many shocking moments in the first season, including Violet (Taissa Farmiga) finding out that she died in the haunted house, Tate (Evan Peters) shooting up his school in skeleton makeup and Addie (Jamie Brewer) being hit by a car and killed.

What ultimately wound up being most shocking, however, was when almost every main character died by the end of the season. Fans wondering how the show could go on for multiple seasons were surprised to learn that each season of American Horror Story would feature its own self-contained story.

In season 2, subtitled Asylum, the shocking moments seemed to multiply. The identity of Bloody Face was mystery for much of the season, until the seemingly innocent Dr. Thredson (Zachary Quinto) revealed himself to be the serial killer. The love story between Dr. Arden (James Cromwell) and Sister Mary Eunice (Lily Rabe) developed throughout the season and became tragic after the latter died. This caused Dr. Arden to lay on top of her body and cremate themselves in the furnace.

Another shocking moment in American Horror Story: Asylum for other reasons was when the asylum patients broke out into song and dance in The Name Game. It was soon revealed to be a hallucination, but the moment was surprising nonetheless. At the end of the season, Lana Winters (Sarah Paulson) killed her son Johnny (Dylan McDermott), providing a shocking ending to the season as a whole.

At the beginning of the current season, American Horror Story: Coven, viewers were shocked as they were introduced to the menacing Madame LaLaurie (Kathy Bates), a New Orleans socialite who tortured and killed black slaves in her mansion. In episode 3 of Coven, Fiona (Jessica Lange) killed Madison (Emma Roberts), thinking she was the next Supreme to take her place.

There is sure to be many more surprises to come in American Horror Story: Coven.
