Phillip Phillips underwent 8 surgeries to reconstruct his kidneys and is doing good, according to his father also named Phillip Phillips.

"The recovery's probably two to four weeks," Phillips told People. "He's healthy, he's good. His kidneys are good. I can't wait for America and the whole world to see him [after his surgery], because he's a big cut-up. He's going to have some fun."

The 21-year-old singer who was crowned the latest American Idol waited until the end of the show to get the surgery done despite doctor's advice.

He is expected to perform on the American Idol tour this summer.

Phillips' chronic kidney problems were a major story throughout the run of American Idol. At one point in the competition he had to be rushed to the hospital after complaining of severe abdominal pain.

According to his dad, the singer underwent eight separate surgeries during the competition, People Magazine reports.

"He's been doing [well], but it's just grueling hours and it's just amazing what he's done through the journey," the singer's father Phillip Phillips told the magazine.

"Eight operations since we started American Idol ... He's hitting 50 percent, but he's still up there swinging away," he added.

Phillips has been open to tell about his health struggles.

"It's been tough, but you know, I've had a lot of great people around me and a lot of great doctors, so that really helped out a lot," he said before.
