Rhys and The Americans creator Joe Weisberg spoke with TV Guide about the season 2 premiere recently, in which they suggested that something bad will happen to the Jennings.

In the premiere, Philip will go undercover as a Texas oilman who wishes to sell weaponry to a radical Afghan group that kills Soviet invaders. The operation does not go smoothy and eventually leads to what the report describes as a "truly horrific event" that affects Elizabeth, Philip and the kids.

"What happens is a brutal reminder that they're not immortal," Rhys said, of the incident. "And for the first time they realize their kids aren't either. Philip hopes that Elizabeth will slowly change her mind about their job, because the more she invests in family, the more she'll pull away from that other responsibility. And that's Philip's long game."

Rhys added that season 2 will feature Philip and Elizabeth being more united against external forces as opposed to their drifting apart in season 1. The couple becomes more into each other than they ever were before.

"Elizabeth finally loves Philip as much as he does her," Weisberg said. "They started out with a fake marriage, and it's starting to turn real. They're like newlyweds who have two kids and more than 15 years together."

The Americans season 2 premieres Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 10 p.m. on FX.
