Television is a fickle business, and when popular shows inevitably end, their finales don't always live up to fans expectations.

Some shows, when given advanced warning that they are about to end their runs on TV, manage to tie up all loose ends nicely and please their fans, When Friends ended its 10-year run on NBC, fans were delighted to see their favorite group of six heading for a last cup of coffee at their beloved coffee house, with Ross and Rachel finally back together for good, and Monica and Chandler the proud parents of twins. 10 years after the show went off the air, fans are still rabidly hoping for a Friends reunion episode or movie, though the cast continues to turn such a thing down. Reports have recently surfaced however, that Jennifer Aniston is considering producing a Broadway musical version of the show.

However, some shows botch their finales completely -- angering and upsetting die-hard fans who think writers took an easy shortcut at ending a show. CBS' How I Met Your Mother, which just ended a nine-season run, angered and upset a large portion of its fans for investing a whole season in Barney and Robin's wedding weekend and leading up to when Ted finally met Tracy -- only to have Barney and Robin get divorced, Tracy die, and Ted and Robin back together as the credits began to roll. Though the show creators admitted that had been the plan from the beginning, the fans were still upset by the decision.

Other series however, are pulled without warning, and aren't given a chance to truly give their fans closure, making their final episodes, which weren't necessarily intended to be finales, unsatisfying.
