The upcoming 29th season of Survivor is currently filming in Nicaragua, and there have already been an interesting development, in addition to a big format change, which was announced Wednesday by host Jeff Probst.

Popular Big Brother Contestant Set To Be Cast On Survivor?

Live on location in San Juan del Sur, Entertainment Weekly Radio spoke with Probst about a new twist set to occur in the upcoming season of Survivor. Though the upcoming season features the Blood vs. Water twist deployed in Season 27, this season will be missing one of the more significant elements: Redemption Island.

"We're not doing Redemption Island. When you're out, you're out," Probst revealed to EW Radio hosts Dalton Ross and Jessica Shaw.

Survivor Season 29 Going Back To Final Three Instead Of Continuing With Final Two?

Redemption Island, which was in effect in Seasons 22, 23 and 27, features the most recent eliminated contestants battling it out in a challenge arena for a chance to return to the game. Probst had previously said that Redemption Island would be back for Survivor: San Juan del Sur, but now he is saying that he and the producers changed their minds.

In its stead, they will be enacting a new twist while still using the challenge arena.

"Instead of Redemption Island, we decided, we have this arena being built. What if instead of that, we use it for something else," Probst teased Wednesday. "Something that will make Blood vs. Water a little more.. interesting."

When Shaw asked if it would make things a little more "bloody," Probst confirmed that it would.

"There is no way to save your loved one, how would you feel after that?" he asked, hypothetically. The longtime host would not elaborate on the new twist.

This news comes in the days after Probst announced that one of the competing pairs had to quit the game before it began due to medical issues. This brought the season's cast from 20 down to 18. It is not known if this had an effect on their decision to not use Redemption Island.

Survivor: San Juan del Sur premieres this fall on CBS, though the network has not announced a specific premiere date yet. It will return to its regular Wednesdays at 8 p.m. timeslot.
