Survivor may be going back to a final three format as early as next season, based on new comments by host Jeff Probst.

Survivor: Cagayan featured a final two rather a final three for the first time in 10 seasons, with Survivor: Tocantins. The show's go-to has been final three for several seasons now, but Probst suggested to Entertainment Weekly that they may not necessarily be going back to featuring final two in the future.

The host explained that it was mostly due to Lindsey Ogle quitting the game that made them switch to the final two.

"Yes, Lindsey quitting changed our numbers and so instead of a final three we only had enough players for a final two," he revealed. "Fortunately we knew early enough that we could adapt without any interruption. Yes, I loved having the final two and yes had it been Kass vs Woo I would not have been as happy. I absolutely see the simplicity of a season with no Redemption Island and a final 2. I get it. But the truth of the matter is that when we start with twenty people it's very hard to get the numbers down to a final two. It's honestly just math."

Assuming Season 29's San Juan del Sur - Blood vs. Water starts with 20 people like the original Blood vs. Water season, it is possible that they will go back to ending with a final three. However, if there are contestants who quit the game or they have to be medically evacuated, it appears that they would do a final two in that case.

Survivor: San Juan del Sur airs this fall on CBS in the regular Wednesdays at 8 p.m. timeslot. An official premiere date has not yet been announced.
