Johnny Appleseed chose Chromeo's upbeat track Jealous as the instrumental for its recent Hard Apple Cider commercial and on Thursday took the partnership a step further. The electro-funk duo, comprised of David Macklovitch and Patrick Gemayel, gave a special performance in Boston's Seaport District to help the company promote its new drink with an enormous ice luge.

"I like the fact that it's this really bold installation," Macklovitch told Enstars over the phone of the 25-foot ice sculpture. "It kind of fits with the Chromeo idea of really wacky, off the wall, original stuff."

The two Canadians, who formed Chromeo in 2004, decided to partner with Johnny Appleseed for the event on June 19 in order to interact with their fans on a deeper level. "It brings the collaboration to life," Macklovitch said. "It actual translates into something tangible that fans can benefit from."

Chromeo performed a DJ set as well as Jealous, which Macklovitch described as the group's "most accomplished" tune to date. The song appears on Chromeo's fourth studio album, White Women. While the title appears controversial, it simply pays homage to photographer Helmut Newton, whom Macklovitch deemed a major influence on Chromeo's visual work. The German-Australian photographer used the same title for his first photography book in 1976.

"When I saw that I was like, 'Man, that would be such a funny album title,'" Macklovitch said. "It sounds like these weird '70s album titles that you're like, 'Why did they call it that?'"

Chromeo's latest album is one that Macklovitch said he's particularly proud of. The duo spent almost two years completing it and it peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 chart.

"It's our most accomplished and most ambitious work," he said. "And it's the album that we got the most attention for in our whole career."

Aside from Jealous, Macklovitch noted that another one of his favorites on the album is Lost on the Way Home featuring Solange Knowles. Macklovitch and Gemayel have been friends with the 27-year-old for several years and felt she was the ideal vocalist for the uptempo track.

"We went to her house and wrote with her all night so it was really an organic thing it wasn't like she emailed us some vocals or anything," he explained. "It was a total collaboration."

Macklovitch, who said that Drake's 0 to 100 is on his summer playlist, added that he'd love to make music with some more artists, including the ASAP Mob crew. (ASAP Ferg had a cameo in Chromeo's video for Jealous.)

"There's going to be all types of people we work with in the future," Macklovitch said. "We will definitely open Chromeo up even more."
