Disneyland's Haunted Mansion ride is celebrating its 45th anniversary, and now it is getting brought to the screen once more.

Girl Meets World Debuts On Disney Channel

The Hollywood Reporter reported on Thursday that Disney is planning an animated special inspired by the ride.

The special will air on the Disney Channel, as well as Disney XD, which is Disney's channel for their animated programming by and large. The special is being produced and animated by Gris Grimly, and it will be written and produced by Scott Peterson and Joshua Pruett. Those two are writers for Disney's popular kids cartoon Phineas and Ferb. Given this brain trust, it seems likely that this special will be family friendly, or perhaps even for children.

Eddie Murphy Hollywood's Most Overpaid Actor

This is not the first time that the Haunted Mansion ride, long one of the most popular at Disneyland, has been adapted for the screen. In 2003, a film was made starring Eddie Murphy. Like many of Murphy's films of somewhat recent vintage, it was not well-received by critics, and did not make much of an impact in pop culture. As such, it isn't as if this special needs to compete with a beloved film.

Obviously, this is not as big of a swing, as this is just a TV special on their own network, as opposed to a major motion picture. The Haunted Mansion does have some name recognition, and it can really just be placed upon any old haunted house story, to be fair, making this adaption a relatively easy proposition. This special was announced alongside three pilots for the Disney XD channel. None of them are based on Disney attraction, and as such don't quite have the same cache.
