Eddie Murphy has landed the top spot as the Most Overpaid Actor in Hollywood for 2012. The complete list, compiled by Forbes magazine, was based on actors' earnings gathered for its Celebrity 100 list. Each actor's salary and success on the box office was scrutinized to see the return on the investment made to them by the studios.

According to Forbes, a movie has to earn at least twice as much as its production budget to make a profit. Murphy's Tower Heist film last year, which had an estimated budget of $75 million, only earned $153 million at the box office.   Forbes estimated that Murphy returned an average or $2.30 for every $1 he was paid for his last three films.

Actress Katherine Heigl ranked second on the list as she only averaged a $3.40 return for every dollar she was paid in her last three movies. Her latest film "One For the Money" only brought in $37 million compared to the estimated $40 million budget.

Ranking in third is Reese Witherspoon who averaged a return of $3.90 for every dollar she received. Her most recent film, "This Means War," earned $157 million with an estimated $65 million budget.

Sandra Bullock came in fourth, with an average return of just $5 for every $1 she earned. Her last two films in the last three years, All About Steve and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, both bombed.

Actor Jack Black placed fifth on the list, with an average of a $5.20 return for every $1 he was paid.  He starred in a comedy last year, The Big Year, which only raked $7 million.
