A new study linking Viagra use to vision impairment was released becoming a cause for concern for men who use the product to improve their sex life.

The study, put together by researchers from Australia's University of South Wales and published in Experimental Eye Research, states that the drug which has the ingredient Sildenafil Citrate, may cause blindness as well as other vision difficulties.

It's a bigger issue for individuals who carry a specific gene for the blinding disease. One in 50 people are reported to have this gene, even though their vision is fine.

"Side effects can include sensitivity to bright light, blurred vision and altered color vision," Dr. Lisa Nivison-Smith, first author of the study, said in a statement. "We are concerned that people who have normal vision but who carry a single copy of the mutant gene for the blinding disease, Retinitis Pigmentosa, could be more susceptible to these changes."

Previous studies disclosed similar findings in men who use impotent drugs. Dr. Howard Pomeranz of the University of Minnesota told MSNBC last year that "the drug is doing something to alter the circulation of blood to the optic nerve and in turn causing an injury to the nerve resulting in a loss of vision."

However, the patients used in the study had high blood pressure and "an anatomical risk factor involving the optic nerve."

"If a patient takes the medication and 45 minutes later suddenly notices the onset of vision loss, to me that's certainly some evidence there is a connection between the two," Pomeranz also said.
