Kyle Bennett Died, BMX Cyclist Dead, Auto Accident In Texas
Olympic BMX cyclist Kyle Bennett was killed in a serious car accident on Sunday, Oct. 14, in Conroe, Texas. He was 33.
USA Cycling released a statement saying that the single-vehicle crash happened early on Sunday north of Houston.
He was not wearing his seatbelt and was traveling at accelerated speed in his 2006 Toyota pickup truck when it swerved off the road and hit a pipe before hitting a set of iron gates and trees, according to Business Week.
Bennett was driving over the speed limit and by the time police took him out of the damaged vehicle, which was completely flipped over, he was already pronounced dead. No one else was involved or injured in the accident.
The cyclist is survived by his fiancée and daughter.
"Rest in peace to father, friend, Olympian, multi-World Champion, hall of famer, legend, and all around awesome person with such effortless style and flow, Kyle Bennett," said BMX rider Derek Betcher to ESPN. "I was always so inspired by watching you ride, and equally inspired by your humble personality. I'll remember all the good times, my friend. You'll be forever missed."
Bennett was a member of the 2008 Olympic BMX team, a sport that made its Olympic debut at the 2008 Beijing Games. He was a three-time Union Cycliste Internationale champion and a three-time National Cycle League champion. An avid and passionate cyclist, he even showed it off with some body ink: he had a tattoo saying "BMX" on his right upper arm.
This past summer, Bennett made the BMX Hall of Fame for his accomplishments over the span of his career. Autoworldnews.com reported that shortly after Bennett's death was announced, hundreds of people gathered outside the Kyle Bennett Armadillo BMX Park.
