A friend and former spokesperson for David Petraeus, said his wife, Holly Petraeus is beyond fuming over her husband's affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.

Petraeus' extramarital affair with Broadwell was uncovered last week during an FBI investigation of harassing emails sent from Broadwell to one of Petraeus' friends, Jill Kelley. Kelley reported the messages to the FBI and after digging into Broadwell's emails, investigators discovered "sexually explicit emails" between Broadwell and Petraeus revealing that the two were having an affair.

U.S. Army Col. Steve Boylan told ABC News Monday about Holly, "Well you can imagine, she's not exactly pleased right now... In a conversation with David Petraeus this weekend, he said that, 'Furious would be an understatement.' And I think anyone that's been put in that situation would probably agree. He deeply hurt his family."

Broadwell's emails "indicated that she thought the other woman was becoming involved with Petraeus," according to The Washington Post.

Broadwell and her husband, Dr. Scott Broadwell, were on vacation celebrating her 40th birthday when news broke of the affair and Petraues resigning as CIA director on Friday. The couple were enjoying a two-day break at the Middleton Inn in Little Washington, Va., when news of the scandal broke, according to the Daily Mail.

Sources told Washingtonian.com that the couple enjoyed bike rides, champagne and romantic dinners since arriving at the luxury inn on Thursday. Sources also added that Scott had arranged a romantic evening on Friday including a bouquet of flowers and champagne to celebrate Paula's birthday, but by the time they returned from dinner on Friday evening, they were described by onlookers as "not being in very good moods."

They left on Saturday morning and a party that had been planned on Saturday night for Paula's birthday was canceled.

Rumors surfaced Monday that Scott knew about his wife's extramarital affair beforehand and did nothing about it because he had great respect for Petraues and his position.
