Gen. John Allen, commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, is the newest government figure to get mixed in with the Jill Kelley, Paula Broadwell and David Petraeus FBI investigation, Pentagon officials said.

Newest findings revealed that Gen. Allen was in involved in "inappropriate communications" with Kelley, a close family friend of David Petraeus', who is in an ongoing investigation regarding his extramarital affair with his biographer Broadwell, according to ABC.

The FBI uncovered "potentially inappropriate" emails between Allen and Kelley between 2010 and 2012, according to a senior U.S. defense official traveling with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. The department is reviewing at least 20,000 documents connected to the matter, the official said. There is no official word regarding the nature of the emails between Kelley and Allen, who are both married.

One official said Allen denied having an "inappropriate relationship" with Kelley, according to The Los Angeles Times. Allen replaced Petraeus as the top commander in Afghanistan and was nominated in October by President Obama to be Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, the report added. However, Panetta asked the Senate to put Allen's nomination on hold until the investigation is complete.

The scandal started with Broadwell sending harassing emails to Kelley telling her to stay away from Petraeus. Kelley reported the matter to FBI officials and when analyzing email correspondents between the two women, investigators discovered an ongoing affair between Broadwell and Petraeus. The FBI investigation led to the resignation of Petraeus on Friday as CIA director and on Monday, investigators stormed Broadwell's home and left with boxes of documents linked to the extramarital affair between her and Petraeus.

Broadwell is married and has two children, and Petraeus and his wife have been married for 38 years and also have two adult children.

Kelley, who authorities confirmed to be the woman in email correspondence with Broadwell, serves as an social liaison to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla., where the military's Central Command and Special Operations Command is located, according to RGJ.com. The 37-year-old and her husband made a statement on Sunday saying that they have been good friends with Petraeus and his family for over five years.
