As with every week, the movie industry is offering options in the double digits this weekend. With so many options for moviegoers to choose from, The New York Times is examining why studios choose the release dates that they do, and why the amount of offerings has increased.

While the studios are offering mainstream selections like Straight Outta Compton and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., there's also a whole slew of independent movies. Many indie distributors pick slots in late summer because of the relative decline in high-profile movies released, while also attempting to court those who are tired of the blockbusters.

Steve Gilula, co-president of Fox Searchlight Pictures, addressed this phenomenon.

"The end of July through October, a higher volume of the films released tend to be fewer of those mega-movies that take up all the air," he told The New York Times.

"It's a chessboard game," Jonathan Sehrling, president of IFC Films, told the publication. "Nothing was there when we programmed. We thought it was a good, quiet period. There is not a quiet weekend now at all."

A total of 29 films are being released this weekend, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Which not all of them are set for wide release, there will certainly be something for everyone.
