Merida (Amy Manson) is one of many characters joining ABC's Once Upon a Time next season, and the showrunners are addressing certain rumors about who she might be related to.

How Merida Will Be 'Your Favorite' New 'Once Upon a Time' Character

The Brave heroine is set to make her Once Upon a Time debut this fall when season 5 premieres. But one question some fans still have is if she has any relations with the current cast of characters.

Some speculated that Merida might be the yet to be born child of Zelena (Rebecca Mader) and Robin Hood (Sean Maguire). OUAT showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz put this theory to bed in a new Entertainment Weekly interview.

Why Snow May Feel Like A 'Failure' In 'Once Upon a Time' Season 5

"It's just a fun theory, but the reality is we are sticking to the canon of the movie Brave in terms of who her parents are and where she came from, but post-movie is where our Once Upon a Time spin comes into play," Horowitz said.

Another theory fans had was that Merida was actually Rumple's (Robert Carlyle) mother. This was due to false casting sides for Rumple's mom that were leaked to the media in order to throw them off the scent.

But even if Merida and Rumple aren't related, they will share characteristics of what Once Upon a Time is all about.

"Her bravery and his cowardice, that certainly fits into the story that we're telling with him and her and all of our characters," Horowitz said.

"And I think, as we can all imagine, when the two of them get together, we don't know what they're saying," Kitsis joked, alluding to both actors being Scottish.

Once Upon a Time season 5 premieres Sunday, Sept. 27 at 8/7c on ABC.
