The network's president announced today, Aug. 27, that the network will broadcast a documentary called Sherpa in over 200 countries and territories in 2016.

"This is a film that is powerful and moving," Discovery Channel President Rich Ross said in a press release, adding, "It brings us somewhere we've never gone before - deep into the lives of the Sherpas who make Everest's climbing culture possible."

Jennifer Peedom directed Sherpa, which will show how Mount Everest's Sherpa community came together while grieving to repossess the mountain following the deadly avalanche that hit on April 18, 2014, claiming the lives of 16 of their own.

In the press release it is noted that the documentary began as a film about the upcoming climbing season from the Sherpas' viewpoint since a highly publicized confrontation occurred in 2013 between Western climbers and a group of Sherpas.

Peedom and her team intended to focus on legendary Sherpa Phurba Tashi's world record-breaking attempt to summit Everest for the 22nd time, but they captured the deadly avalanche instead that struck the Khumbu Icefall, which is the area just above the Mount Everest base camp.

"Jennifer Peedom scales the heights of storytelling in Sherpa because of the deep trust she engendered in the Sherpa people and the unparalleled access they granted her as a result," said John Hoffman, Executive Vice President of Documentaries and Specials for the Discovery Channel, in the press release, adding, "The result is a tour de force that will forever change the way viewers see Mount Everest."

"Jennifer Peedom captured a moment of unexpected high drama and with consummate skill," explained Phil Craig, EVP and Chief Creative Officer for Discovery Networks International, in the press release, adding, "We are delighted to team up with Rich Ross and his team to bring this important story to a global audience."

Discovery Channel gave Enstars an exclusive sneak peek into Sherpa, which can be viewed below.

In the clip, the Sherpas are seen as they help Western climbers get up the mountain, but it is never a safe task.

A Sherpa deemed climbing the mountain for them is "a holy place," whereas Westerners "approach it as a physical challenge."

Sherpa will air on Discovery Channel next year.
