Although the Teen Mom star has had a troubled past, including a 17-month stint in prison, Portwood is ready to move past her former issues and regain some control when it comes to the custody and visitation of Leah.

“She’s hired a lawyer to fight for full custody,” a source told Life & Style, according to a report by OK! Magazine on Wednesday. “She feels she’s gotten her life together and deserves a real relationship with Leah.”

During Teen Mom OG season five, which aired earlier this year, Portwood spoke of her intentions to regain custody, but at the time, she hadn't yet filed. But while she claims to be a new woman since leaving prison nearly two years ago, Shirley appears to have his doubts.

“Gary laughed hysterically when he heard that Amber wants to take him to court,” the insider said. “He said after all the crap Amber’s done, no judge will give her custody.”

Shirley is “not giving her up,” the source added of Leah, “Gary doesn’t think Amber would do a better job taking care of Leah.”

While MTV has yet to officially renew Teen Mom OG for a sixth season, Radar Online claimed weeks ago that Portwood and her co-stars, including Farrah Abraham, Maci Bookout and Catelynn Lowell, had already begun filming.
