The release date for Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5) was announced by Rockstar Games for Sept. 17.

The game company announced the big reveal in an open letter to fans on the Rockstar website on Thursday.

Rockstar's letter stated: "We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time. GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require."

The company ended the letter with an apology to fans for the delayed game release.

There still is no word on which gaming consoles GTA 5 will be released on or if there will be a PC version.

Amazon's French website suggested that a GTA 5 PC offering is in the works, with the online retailer making the title available for pre-order without an official confirmation from Rockstar. The current price for the alleged PC version pre-order is 49.99 Euros.

Dan Houser, vice president for Rockstar Games, was interviewed by IGN and asked if PC and Wii U versions of GTA 5 were possibly in the works. His answer was vague and he said, "Everything else is up for consideration. That's all I can give you."

Houser was also interviewed by the French publication Ecrans and revealed Rockstar games may produce a science fiction version for GTA 6.

However, if Rockstar does go forward with the new genre it will be story focused instead of built around standard future tech scenarios.

"We have no interest in going into science fiction for the sake of flying cars and laser guns," Houser said. "The best science fiction stories are those that speak about the human condition. So while this idea is very tempting and, by definition, anything is possible in a video game, we lack the essential thing for the moment: a good reason."
