A 9-year-old girl in Mexico has given birth, according to her family and local authorities.

Referred to as "Dafne" by The Telegraph, she delivered a baby girl who came in at 5.7 pounds by cesarean section on Jan. 27 in Zoquipan Hospital in Jalisco, located in the western part of Mexico. Both the mother and child have since been released from the hospital over the weekend.

"The father is a boy who is 17, but we have not found him, since he ran away," said Dafne's mother to local officials. "She was just over 8 years old when she got pregnant."

"We are looking for the young man to get his story because she does not understand what has happened," said Jorge Villasenor, of the state prosecutor's office.

"Due to her young age, we don't know if she is being entirely truthful," Lino Ginzalez Corona, spokesperson at Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office, said during a recent press conference. Corona added, "This is a rape or child sex abuse case."

The age of sexual consent in Mexico, according to UNICEF, is 12.

"Dafne" is one of 11 children and her parents, according to ABC, simply could not watch her while they were away at work.

Apparently this is not an unusual case. In recent years, there have been more reports of child births among children so young. In 2010, a 9-year-old Chinese girl gave birth to a baby boy and just last year, a 10-year-old Colombian girl also delivered a baby.
