In an announcement on Thursday, Microsoft confirmed that the Windows 10 free upgrade offer would indeed end this coming July 29. This means that users who have resisted the upgrade, and have been living under pressure from Microsoft's notorious Windows 10 upgrade pop-up app, would finally be able to take a breath of fresh air.

"Details are still being finalized, but on July 29th the Get Windows 10 app that facilitates the easy upgrade to Windows 10 will be disabled and eventually removed from PCs worldwide. Just as it took time to ramp up and roll out the Get Windows 10 app, it will take time to ramp it down," Microsoft said in a statement.

Microsoft's "Get Windows 10" app has become quite notorious among Windows 7 and 8.1 users. Since its launch a year ago, users have complained in online forums that the aggressive pop-up, which could not be disabled unless a third-party app is used, is extremely annoying.

Windows 10 has been pushed by Microsoft since debuting a year ago. With its goal of reaching 1 billion devices, the tech giant has been generous enough to offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for users of the firm's older operating systems, Windows 7 and 8.1. However, due to its existing issues, many users have been hesitant to transition to the firm's latest operating system.

Alas, after July 29, those who have resisted Windows 10 until now would be free of the pop-up notification's burden. However, this also comes at a price, since after July 29, users who would wish to upgrade to the newest operating system would need to dish out a pretty hefty $120.

Considering that Windows 7 and 8.1 have already aged through the years, Microsoft continues to encourage all Windows users to upgrade to Windows 10. After all, there are about two more months to initiate the free upgrade.

Of course, Microsoft still has time to reverse its decision. With the company's thrust towards spreading the operating system among PC users as much as possible, it would not be surprising at all if the tech giant would extend its free upgrade offer.

At least, for now, Microsoft has announced a definitive end to the free upgrade offer's annoying pop-up app.
