Fox's Bones will be entering its 12th and final season next year, and while Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) have come a long way, there are still some storylines from season 1 that will be wrapped up.

While Bones is currently wrapping up its 11th season, co-showrunner Michael Peterson and company are already working on the final season, set to air in early 2017.

Peterson spoke recently about wanting to conclude stories that began in the show's very first season (in 2005!).

"There are a lot of things that we want to wrap up - including some stuff that started Season 1," Peterson told TVLine recently. "There are also some key issues for Booth and Brennan that we want to tackle, and we think we found some pretty cool ways to do it."

The final season will only have 12 episodes as opposed to the usual 20+, but the writers are preparing for a big sendoff.

"We want this to be a grand ride off into the sunset for the final 12 episodes for next season," Peterson said in a previous interview. "We will bring back as many guest cast as humanly possible and whoever is available. We'd love to get Cyndi [Lauper] back. We don't have Betty [White] for the second half of this season, but we'd love to have her come back. Next season, we have one episode in particular that we would love to have her back for. We are leaving it wide open."

Fox was originally supposed to air the final season of Bones in the fall but decided recently to push it to early 2017. The series has been pushed around the Fox scheduled all throughout its run, having aired on just about every day of the week through the first 11 seasons.

Bones airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
