American Horror Story season 6 is premiering in September and fans still don't know the concept, but is there a greater plan at work?

American Horror Story fans are becoming increasing impatient about not knowing the theme for season 6. This is by far the longest period of not knowing the next season's theme in American Horror Story history, and there's still no indication of when it might be revealed.

Now, FX has released the premiere date for season 6 to be Wednesday, Sept. 14. This is also a change from the norm, with each of the first five seasons premiering in October. This makes the lack of knowledge on season 6 even more glaring considering fans now know it will premiere in just over two months.

One possibility for what the show is planning is the idea of a surprise season. The air of mystery and unknown is a common trope in the horror genre, and it's possible that the show could be building up to something big. Plus, surprise releases are becoming common these days (i.e. Beyoncé's last two albums), with little to no media hype leading up to the release ironically creating hype itself.

Even if FX creates promos for the sixth season, they could also be shrouded in mystery. Just a glimpse of actresses like Sarah Paulson or Angela Bassett dressed as their new characters could create even more mystery if they still don't reveal the concept. The show's teaser promos are often cryptic to begin with, so it would be perfectly fitting.

American Horror Story showrunner Ryan Murphy said at PaleyFest back in March that they were working on two different concepts but hadn't picked one just yet. He added that both concepts had "elements of children," which is actually a common AHS trope dating back to the show's first season. Beyond this, Murphy was tight-lipped.

Regardless, it's relatively clear that Murphy and company are planning something special for season 6, and fans will be waiting on bated breath to get any morsels of information.

American Horror Story season 6 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
