Clash Royale recently became the top-grossing app in the iOS store. As a result, Pokemon GO dropped to the number two spot.

The sudden influx of in-app purchases in Supercell's seven-month-old strategy game has definitively put a stop to the massive momentum gained by Pokemon GO during the last couple of months. With this, it appears like Niantic is forced to catch up to its competition.

Clash Royale Update

A recent update by developer Supercell has done the trick, rekindling the interest of its user base and spurring many of its players into a spending frenzy. In a lot of ways, Supercell deserves a lot of credit in this respect, as the small developer was able to give fans of the game enough new features, such as a new tournament mode and new cards, in order to capture the interest and support of its players.

Pokemon GO Dethroned

While Supercell might be the clear winner with this latest development, the decline in revenue from Pokemon GO seems to not bode well for the hyper-popular augmented reality mobile game. Since its initial release, Pokemon GO has seen its popularity skyrocket, with the game claiming the title of being the title to reach 10 million downloads in the shortest span of time.

Since then, however, the lack of engaging updates and a series of patches that resulted in players being unceremoniously blocked from the game have disenchanted millions of Pokemon GO players. Though fewer and fewer players use the augmented reality title every day, it still enjoys a huge user base of 500 million active players.

Clash Royale is King (For Now, At Least)

Of course, it would not be surprising at all if Pokemon GO initiates a number of important and lucrative updates in the near future. Such is simply the nature of the mobile gaming industry. For now, however, luck has favored the proactive initiatives of Supercell, as the developer managed to make its strategy-based game instantly attractive to its players with a single update.
