The star of the latest viral video has come straight from the stars - literally.

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield stepped down on Earth recently after spending five months as commander of the International Space Station, and decided to go out with a bang. On Sunday, Canada's first space walker, acoustic guitar in hand, released a video of himself covering David Bowie's astronomy-themed anthem Space Oddity. Hadfield's clip is believed to be the first music video shot in space.

The video shows Hadfield quite literally floating in a tin can far above the world, and he personalized some of the lyrics to reflect his own experiences. For instance, the line, "Take your protein pills and put your helmet on" became "Lock your Soyuz hatch and put your helmet on," referencing to the capsule due to return him to earth on Monday.

Hadfield is already known on social media for his landscape pictures taken in orbit, and he was recently featured in a video explaining what happens when you wring out a wet towel in space -- the water looks gelatinous, a lot like rubber, and Hadfield even compared it to a dog's chew toy.

Since its posting on Sunday, the Space Oddity video already has over 1 million YouTube viewers, has been retweeted over 17,000 times, and has spread a sense of childlike scientific wonder all over the internet. YouTube user and fellow scientist Solia Vidya wrote Hadfield the following compliment: "From one physicist to another, thank you very much for making this video and getting people interested in tomorrow again."

Even Bowie gave his regards to Hadfield, vociferously tweeting, "CHRIS HADFIELD SINGS SPACE ODDITY IN SPACE! 'Hallo Spaceboy...' "
