Microsoft issued major new firmware updates for both Surface Book and Surface Pro 4. As with the previous updates for these systems, both only apply to those who have installed the Anniversary Update. The company decided to go ahead and release something for its tablet that wants to be a notebook.

Microsoft's Surface Pro 4 was publicized during the Windows 10 Devices event in New York City in 2015. It features a full array of 6th generation Intel Core m3, i5, and i7 processor models, with 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB of RAM configurations, as well as up to a 1TB of storage.

Owners of Surface Pro should probably check for new updates on Windows Update to view Microsoft's new batch of firmware updates for the device. Although it is not clear what the firmware updates actually fix or improve, the updates are still quite interesting. The updates actually have old release dates.

It is possible Microsoft released the firmware updates with the old release dates by mistake. The company also released a new firmware update for the Surface Studio with an old release date. Since these two firmware updates had a coinciding release, it is a probable assumption that they addressed the same firmware issues.

Microsoft released the long-anticipated firmware updates for the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book, with an additional patch for the Surface Book's optional discrete graphics chip. The following has been updated in the December Surface Pro 4 firmware update:

  • Realtek Semiconductor Corp. driver for Realtek High Definition Audio (SST)
  • Realtek High Definition Audio (SST)

The last update was in August 2016 and so apparently, Microsoft considers the Surface Pro 4 to be a fairly stable machine. It seems that Microsoft has done a great job with this update. The computer became faster, less warm and so far, works steadily.
