The first trailer for the upcoming film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was released Tuesday.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty stars Ben Stiller as the titular character who daydreams about extraordinary adventures while living an ordinary life. The first trailer for the film features very little dialogue. Stiller's Walter Mitty lays out his work uniform, eats his breakfast alone and goes to work where he pines after a woman, played by Kristen Wiig.

Mitty imagines himself to be an arctic explorer who had just come home to greet Wiig's character, as she smiles proudly at him. Later, an explorer (Sean Penn) beckons him to join him in a photograph on Mitty's wall.

He envisions himself on the cover of Life magazine as an astronaut, among other historically important men, like Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lennon and John F. Kennedy. He then goes on a series of adventures, which include him skateboarding, jumping out of helicopters and meeting villagers. It is not immediately clear, however, that these adventures actually happened in real life.

Stiller, who also directed the film, said that he originally pitched it as a small comedy that could still make a lot of money.

"If I say to Fox that this movie is like Little Miss Sunshine or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, they freak out, understandably, because they're spending real money and they need to sell it as a big comedy," he told The New Yorker in 2012.

"So I keep referring to Forrest Gump, because it wasn't a big comedy, really, but it also made a ha-zillion dollars. I'm trying to do two things at once: make a movie that brings in a lot of people, but also one that will be really good, and will last."

The film is based on the 1939 short story of the same name and is a remake of the 1947 film adaptation.

The film will be released nationwide on Christmas Day in the U.S.
