Disney+ has released the first teaser trailer for yet another live-action remake of one of their classic animated features, Pinocchio

The original animated version, which was based on a book of the same name by Carlo Collodi, tells the story of a lonely old puppet maker named Geppetto, who wishes on a star that his latest creation, a little boy puppet, would come to life and become his son.

With the help of the Blue Fairy, and an anthropomorphized cricket who acts as the child's conscience, the woodworker gets his wish. But in order to become a real boy, Pinocchio has to prove himself worthy of life by being a good boy. What follows is a cautionary tale of the benefits of honesty and love.

The film stars Tom Hanks as Geppetto, teaming up with longtime collaborator/director Robert Zemeckis, who has worked with Hanks on Forrest Gump, Castaway, and the ever-uncanny The Polar Express.

Others in the cast include Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy, and Keegan-Michael Key, Lorraine Bracco, and Luke Evans in other roles.

This comes with the news of Guillermo del Toro's darker stop-motion take on the characters coming out from Netflix in December.

To be honest, the live-action Disney reboots rarely hold a candle to the magic of the originals that The House of Mouse has been creating since Walt began the studio all those years ago; often feeling like nothing more than lazy cash grabs from the original classics from which they spawned. Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, always felt lacking in terms of the Disney brilliance we know and love in theor animated features. But hey, they make money, and Disney keep their precious copyrights, right?

Hopefully, the acting abilities of Hanks and the rest of the cast can breathe new life into the project, but we'll just have to wait and see when Pinocchio drops on Disney+ on September 8th.
