It looks like an Amy Winehouse biopic is finally getting to the greenlight phase, thanks to Studiocanal.

The film, entitled Back To Black, has been given the go ahead to begin production, and has even found its director. Fifty Shades of Grey helmer Sam Taylor-Johnson has been tapped to direct the film, which will tell the epic and ultimately tragic story of singer Amy Wiinehouse, covering her rapid rise to fame with such hits as "Rehab," and her Grammy-award-winning career, which lead to her untimely death in 2011 due to a servere drug and alcohol dependance.

The director cut her teeth early on, by directing two Elton John videos before transitioning to the big screen.

The film will be written by Manchester born screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh, who is no stranger to writing about the greats of the music industry. His past works include Control from 2007 which tells the story of musician Ian Curtis of the band Joy Division who tragically took his own life at the age of 23, as well as, Nowhere Boy about the early years of John Lennon's career, also directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson

A story about the life of Amy Winehouse has been on Hollywood's radar for quite some time. At one point Noomi Rapace was set to play the role, only to have the production go under.

There is nobody signed on to play the lead in this production as of yet, though it has been reported that the search will commence in the coming weeks. Enstarz will be sure to follow all the details.
