Even before Perry's untimely death on Oct. 28, 2023, he showed his love for the sport. Matt Manasse, his friend and pickleball mentor, said he was out on the pickleball court before he passed away.

Perry died in his home in Los Angeles due to acute effects of ketamine. He was 54.

"He fell in love with the sport and really wanted to use it for his recovery," said Manasse.

In November last year, Lauren also remembered her late close friend while promoting her book on "CBS Mornings."

"No one made me laugh as hard. Just tears, streaming. There was just such a joy in being around him and being his friend," she said of Perry.

She also mentioned that Perry was proud and happy for how his memoir, "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing," was received.

"The solace I take from having seen him at the time I saw him was he was so thrilled with how his book was received -- and not just because it was a huge success, but because his life's work kind of became, 'How can I give back? How can I talk about the struggles I had and hopefully help someone else?'" Graham said.

Perry released his memoir, "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing," on Nov. 1, 2022. Days later, on Nov. 15, Graham released "Have I Told You This Already?"
