When Italy and Argentina face off in an international friendly on Wednesday, it will be the first time the two teams will meet in over a decade.

It was 12 years ago when both squads last played a friendly, which Argentina won by a victory of 2-1. However. their upcoming match in Rome will be lacking some star power since Argentina's superstar Lionel Messi will miss the game due to a thigh strain. The Barcelona forward sat out his club's final preseason game against Malaysia XI on Aug. 10.

"Leo Messi will not feature in the international friendly between Argentina and Italy in Rome this Wednesday," a statement on fcbarcelona.com read. "After undergoing tests conducted by the Argentina national team doctors, it was decided that Messi should return to Barcelona and focus on recovering from his muscle injury."

While Argentina will have attrition to their squad, Italy will have an addition in Pablo Osvaldo. The Buenos Aries-born striker missed the cut for the Confederations Cup tournament after he criticized then Roma coach Aurelio Andreazzoli on Twitter.

Italy will also roll out some of its young stars for the matchup against Argentina, including U-21 notables Lorenzo Insigne, Alessandro Florenzi and Marco Verratti.
