AMC's hit zombie series, The Walking Dead, continues to garner a massive amount of followers for its upcoming season, which will be kicking off in the fall.

New showrunner Scott M. Gimple, who's been a writer on the program even prior to his promotion, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about how executive producer and comic book creator Robert Kirkman differentiates his approach from the comic series to the small screen.

"Kirkman is more about departures from the comics than I have been in the past. His approach is more like, 'Oh it's all good, we've seen that in the comic. We can mix it up. 'I've been more hardcore about keeping true to the exact story of the comic. Kirkman wound up loosening me up a little more about it, as far as playing with different things going in different directions," he said.

Gimple also touched on how his writers will be using the characters and storylines in the comics for the TV series.

"There are going to be big moments from the comic that will be seen in a very different context that fans will recognize but aren't that different in the continuity of the book," he said.
