Rod Stewart has premiered a new version of his hit Maggie May, a recording of a previously unreleased BBC Radio 1 performance, which will feature on his upcoming Rarities collection, via Rolling Stone.

Universal Music will release a brand new Rod Stewart collection, Rarities, on Sept. 3. The two-disc set will feature alternative versions of Stewart's hit songs, non-LP singles, b-sides, studio outtakes, and covers. Stewart has rehashed the Who's Pinball Wizard and Bob Dylan's Girl from the North Country for this album.

On this version of Maggie May, Faces guitarist Ronnie Wood trades the mandolin's twang for gritty guitar lines, endowing the jangly rhythm of the song with a more raw and gravelly texture.

Maggie May was originally released in 1971, and featured on Stewart's third studio album, Every Picture Tells a Story. He co-wrote the song with Martin Quittenton.

Stewart also presented Sir Elton John with the first Brits Icon award, at a special concert at the London Palladium on Sept. 2.

The 68-year-old was a guest on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Aug. 29, and even performed Maggie May that night. He was also spotted getting dinner with his wife, Penny Lancaster, and his daughter, Kimberley, and son, Sean, the same night after his taping for the show. The family got dinner Chateau Marmont Hotel in Los Angeles.

Stewart and 42-year-old Penny have been together for 14 years and married for six, the coupled have two sons, Alastair, who is seven, and two-year-old Aiden.
