Now that Red John is a thing of the past, The Mentalist's Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon have a chance to think about each other in more than just a strictly professional manner.

When the series picks up with "My Blue Heaven" this Sunday, the plot will have jumped two years into the future. While Jane (Simon Baker) hides out in South America, his former CBI friends have each taken on different jobs. Cho (Tim Kang) has defected to the FBI, Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) have their own detective agency, and Lisbon (Robin Tunney) is the police shief for a little town in Washington State.

Although walking the beach and relaxing in the sunshine sounds like a good lifestyle, Jane won't be completely content in paradise.

"You will see that [Jane] really misses Lisbon and is a sad, floundering shadow of a man. He's afraid and just going around and around in circles. He's completely lost his mojo and he's asking himself, 'Is this what you want to be? Is this the way you see the rest of your life?'" Baker explained to TV Guide. "But the episode is also really romantic in a way, because you see how much Jane longs for companionship."

When the FBI finally catches up with Jane (he is a wanted fugitive, after all) there will be a job offer on the table. Not willing to head back to his old life, marred as it was by his desire for revenge, Jane will initially decline, according to TV Guide. However, by time the next episode, "Green Thumb," rolls around, the faux psychic will agree to help, but only if Lisbon is also involved.

Without Red John casting a shadow over their relationship, will the pair be able to move past their previous working friendship?

"They've been so engrossed in this massive task they haven't really looked around at the people around them and think about who those people are what they really mean to them," said series creator Bruno Heller, according to Entertainment Weekly. "Now Jane and Lisbon have a chance to take a breath and think about each other in a way that they haven't before."
