OneRepublic took the stage Wednesday night at the 2014 People's Choice Awards to perform their current hit, Counting Stars.

Nominated in the category of Favorite Band (against Imagine Dragons, Maroon 5, One Direction, and Paramore), the Colorado quintet pulled the highly popular song from their 2013 album, Native. Accompanied by a string quartet, Ryan Tedder and Co. showed the crowed why they were nominated in the first place.

In preparation of the event, the 34-year-old frontman explained where the idea for Counting Stars came from.

"This is kind of random, but I was in a collective group of people, like last summer, writing for Beyoncé," Tedder told the People's Choice blog. "One morning I got up to come up with ideas for her and the idea I came up with didn't sound at all like her, and it sounded like us. And then I kinda just started freaking out and waiting to get home to actually finish it."

Tedder's onstage performances tend to be just as spontaneous as his sudden bursts of lyrical creativity. Heading into Wednesday's live performance, the singer was unsure what he would do when he hit the stage.

"Once the camera goes on, I don't know what I'm gonna do," Tedder said, according to the People's Choice blog. "I'm usually just exploring the stage, so who knows what is going to happen."
