Doctor Who is taking its new, "100 percent Rebel Time Lord" down an old familiar path during season 8.

Following the BBC series 50th anniversary, showrunner Steven Moffat appears to be changing the course of the New Who ship and heading back to the familiar waters of Classic Who. With the sprightly Doctors of recent years out of the picture, Peter Capaldi's twelfth iteration is forging a new legacy for the Time Lord.

"There would be little point in making as radical a change as we've made unless you're going to go quite different with the Doctor," Moffat told Doctor Who Magazine (via CultBox) "Our vague idea is... the last two Doctors have been brilliant, and have been your 'good boyfriend' Doctors. But the Doctor isn't always like that. There is the sort of Tom Baker, Christopher Eccelston end of the spectrum, where he is mad and dangerous and difficult."

Ben Wheatly, who is directing the first two episodes of season 8, acknowledged that his recent work is slightly different from the rebooted Doctor Who fans have been seeing since 2005.

"To have a unity that runs eight years... it's pretty crazy," Wheatley explained to Digital Spy. "It seems to me the episodes that we're doing now seem more like classic Who."

Considering the Doctor Who crew now dons jackets emblazoned original series' logo, this Classic Who trend will probably continue well past the start of season 8.

Despite this, the premiere will see a visit from NewWho's Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor (see video below), Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh), Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart), and Strax (Dan Starkey).

Doctor Who is expected to return to BBC and BBC America this fall. Catch a glimpse of Capaldi and Jenna Louise Coleman (Clara) filming for the premiere in the video below.
