The 2014 National Invitation Tournament for Men's Basketball was announced Sunday night, and as expected Larry Brown's SMU team earned a top seed.

The Mustangs, who were the first ranked team to be left out of the NCAA tournament for the first time since  Utah State was snubbed in 2004, will go head-to-head against Big West regular champion UC Irvine on Wednesday.

Brown, the former NBA coach admitted that he was devasted that his team did not make it to the NCAA tourney.

"I learned a long time ago when things don't go exactly your way, you can either pack it in or use it as a learning experience to get better. We can use this as motivation," he told fans at SMU's party at Moody Coliseum on Sunday.

Among SMU, Minnesota, Florida State abd St. Johns also nabbed No. 1 seeds.

Automatic bids included UC Irvine (Big West), Utah Valley (WAC), Robert Morris (NEC), Green Bay (Horizon), Belmont (Ohio Valley), Georgia State (Sun Belt), Boston University (Patriot League), High Point (Big South), Davidson (Southern), Florida Gulf Coast (Atlantic Sun), Louisiana Tech (Conference USA), Iona (MAAC) and Vermont (America East).
