Supernatural's Castiel is taking on a position of power, and it's a role that makes the rebel angel very nervous.

What Will Happen In The 'Supernatural' Finale? Hints At 'Do You Believe in Miracles' Plot

Cas' (Misha Collins) past experiences with leadership have ended rather, well, bloody, and that is a road the wingless angel is loath to go down again. Unfortunately for him, Castiel's firm convictions and notoriety amongst his kinsmen have made him into a major player in the angel war, and one that other members of God Squad are willing to follow into battle.

"What [Cas] wants most of all is to be a solider in this fight to take back Heaven," explained executive producer Jeremy Carver, according to TV Line. "What a soldier means, he's constantly re-examining that because he doesn't want to fight the same way Bartholomew wanted to fight."

Cas may have found a brutal way to reclaim another angel's grace during "Holy Terror," but that is about as much blood as he is willing to spill in this new civil war.

"He doesn't want to kill angels in the way they've been killed. And he's not certain he's a leader, either," Carver continued. "This is a guy who has done, arguably, more harm to angels than good and a guy who's severely aware of his own limitations. This idea that angels might want to follow him, it's a very, very heavy burden for him to grapple with. And we'll see him continue to grapple with it."

Viewers will be able to find out more about Castiel's plans when he returns to Supernatural in "Meta Fiction" on April 15 (see video below).

Supernatural airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
