The final episode of Survivor: Cagayan will start with four players left, lending some speculation that there could be a final 2 at the end instead of a final 3.

All Female Alliance Forms To Vote Out Tony?

CBS has released an official synopsis for the final episode of Survivor: Cagayan, and while there is no indication of what transpires in the episode, there are rumors that there will be a final 2. This would be the first time Survivor ends with a final 2 instead of a final 3 since Survivor: Tocantins (season 18).

"Four Castaways remain and one will be crowned the Sole Survivor during the two-hour season finale, followed by the Live Reunion Show (10:00-11:00 PM), hosted by Emmy Award-winning host Jeff Probst," the synopsis reads. The episode is set to air on Wednesday, May 21.

Survivor Winners Expecting Fourth Baby

Despite the rarity of there being only four castaways left going into the finale, there is precedent that there can still just be a final 3. Survivor: China featured only four contestants left going into the finale, Todd Herzog, Courtney Yates, Amanda Kimmel and Denise Martin, but only Denise was voted out in the episode and the former three making up the final three.

Most recently, Survivor: Philippines featured a final four of Denise Stapley, Michael Skupin, Lisa Whelchel and Malcolm Freberg, but only Malcolm was voted out in the episode.

However, Survivor: Cagayan has been plagued with rumors of a final two for several weeks. Host Jeff Probst may have hinted at a final two during a post-show interview with Entertainment Weekly in March.

"You can't predict if there will be a switch, a merge, an idol, Redemption Island, Exile Island, two tribes or three tribes, a final three or a final two," he said, going on to list more twists. Meanwhile, last week's eliminated contestant Jeremiah Wood teased the possibility in an interview with HitFix.

When discussing the possibility of fellow contestant Jefra Bland switching over to his side and voting with him, he said:

"If she flips over with me and Spencer and Tash, this was her Million Dollar Decision and she got something where if she makes it to the Final 2 or 3, that she has something to go on, she has something to present to the Jury. I think Tony and them scared her back in to going back with them."

Considering there has not been a final two since Survivor: Tocantins, the mention of a "final 2 or 3" may suggest that it could come true.

However, there has not been any confirmation either way on how Survivor: Cagayan will go down in the end.

Survivor: Cagayan airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on CBS.
