Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 is attempting to go head-to-head with Apple's MacBook Air.

The new tablet/laptop hybrid made its debut on Tuesday at a New York City presentation, and it looks like the tech superpower has advanced far beyond last year's mediocre Surface Pro 2.

Weighing in at just 1.7 pounds (over a pound lighter than the 13-inch MacBok Air) and measuring 12 inches, the Pro 3 is only 9.1mm thick. This thin exterior holds a 2,160-by-1,440 display, is powered by either and Intel Core i3, Core i5, or Core i7 processor, and will run Windows 81. Pro, according to PC Mag.

"This is the tablet that can replace your laptop," said Panos Panay, corporate VP of Microsoft, according to Mashable. "We designed it in thinness around every corner. This is faster than the Surface Pro 2 you've loved to date and is much thinner."

Features that promote the tablet's "lapability" (ability to be used while sitting on one's lap) include a 180-degree kickstand, a newly improved trackpad, a SP3 keyboard, and the Surface Pen which connects to the Cloud.

"[Tablets] are designed for you to sit back and watch movies, browsing the web and snacking on apps," Panay explained, according to Mashable. "Laptops are designed to do something ... editing and making. Sometimes they come out clunky or beautiful, but that is a design point and they are made for that reason."

Buyers can snag the Surface Pro 3 with Core i3 for $799 starting on June 20, but those looking for the Core i5 or i7 models will have to wait until August.
