The backlash from the controversial Aaliyah film was a bit too much for Zendaya Coleman, who snagged the role of the late Are You That Somebody singer.

Aaliyah Biopic To Highlight R. Kelly Controversy

An insider told E! News Sunday, "Zendaya is no longer involved in the project. Aaliyah has always been an inspiration to Zendaya. She was honored to portray her and pay tribute to her. If she is going to do it, she wants to do it right."

Coleman came under fire when signed on to the lead role of the upcoming Lifetime biopic with the working title Aaliyah: Princess Of R&B; mainly because Aaliyah's family did not want the TV film to happen.

Fans React To Zendaya Coleman Aaliyah Role

The same source revealed that the movie hit a snag with production issues involving the rights to Aaliyah's songs.

The movie is slated to document Aaliyah's rise to fame to the tragic and sudden death after an airplane crash on Aug. 25, 2001.

Lifetime announced Coleman's role in the movie on June 16. Since then, the former Disney star faced lots of backlash from Aaliyah fans who thought she was not ethnic enough for the role. Coleman responded to critics while speaking with TMZ June 20 and said, "A lot of people say that I'm not Black enough."

She then brought her father into the camera view and said, "Ladies and gentlemen this is my father. Half black is just enough. It doesn't matter what color you are it matters how you portray the character. For those who don't know Angela Bassett and Tina Turner look nothing alike. But she was that character."

Her father went on to joke that the movie would be taped during the summer, so Coleman would have plenty of time to get a tan.
