No new casting has been confirmed for Penny Dreadful's second season on Showtime, but with actors like Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, Harry Treadaway, and Timothy Dalton, the series seems to be at its best when the leads are thrown together.

Recently Dalton (Hot Fuzz), who plays Sir Malcolm on the series, opened up to The Wrap about filming the flashback episode Closer Than Sisters, in which his background with Eva Green's (Sin City: A Dame To Kill For) Vanessa Ives is revealed.

The actor freely gave his opinion on the relationship between the two characters, as well as how they filmed Vanessa's discovery of Sir Malcolm's affair with her mother two separate ways. In the first version, he does not know she has seen them. In the second version, he does. The series ultimately decided to go with the version in which Sir Malcolm does not realize Vanessa has seen and the damage it has done.

There was one question, however, that Dalton refused to answer. When The Wrap's Tim Molloy asked whether or not Sir Malcolm could in fact be Vanessa's real father, Dalton started laughing.

"Oh my, oh my," he replied, "I think the phone is going down immediately. I'm not answering that question."

The notion is not necessarily that far fetched. Malcolm noted halfway through the first season that Vanessa is indeed "the daughter he deserves" and while Vanessa looks mostly like her mother, she does possess some of Sir Malcolm's personal qualities, including stubbornness and strength.

Nonetheless, Dalton remained tight-lipped on the theory, though he did agree that their is something interesting between them. "I would just leave your excellent question as an excellent question," he declared.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second, longer season in 2015.
