Tomlinson revealed the news July 17 writing, "I'm absolutely gutted the Doncaster Rovers deal is not going ahead. I am desperate for the club to be given the recognition it deserves." Tomlinson continued by saying that he was told the deal to buy the club was not dependent on crowd funding and that he was "misled."

Tomlinson said that despite this set-back, his passion for the Rovers is still "as strong as ever" and he would do whatever he could to help the club out.

In June, it was reported that Tomlinson was looking to acquire the soccer club. BBC reported that Tomlinson and former Doncaster owner John Ryan, 64, would be co-chairs of the soccer team.

Ryan told BBC yesterday that deal was also in doubt. "The statement is a fabrication," Ryan told BBC Radio Sheffield. "It is an unauthorized version of the truth. The situation is that the crowd-funder didn't succeed and we are very sorry about that but the real problem is with the Football League. They have made it so difficult now that unless you have a bag full of cash you are going to get turned down."

The football league responded by saying they weren't presented with a "satisfactory business plan" for the takeover deal.
