This week HBO released the first official poster for the fifth season of Boardwalk Empire, suggesting that perhaps no one will be left standing by the series finale.

'Boardwalk Empire' Gets Shortened Final Season

Earlier this month the network released a preview (featured below) for prohibition drama's fifth and final season, emphasizing the tagline "All Empires Fall".

The new poster, which can also be seen on Spoiler TV, echoes this sentiment with "NO ONE GOES QUIETLY" printed in bold white letters across a boardwalk that stretches out against an ominous gray sky.

The boardwalk itself is composed of seemingly endless old planks, with bullets and bullet casings scattered across it as far as the eye can see. At the bottom of the image reads "Boardwalk Empire: The Final Season" along with the premiere date and time.

Fans have spent the summer speculating as to the fate of Boardwalk Empire's conflicted yet unforgiving lead, Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi). The character is based on real-life criminal Nucky Johnson, though series creator Terrence Winter made sure the names were different as to easily stray from historical accuracy without any backlash.

The show's fifth season is set to take place during the 1930s. The real-life Johnson died from natural causes a few decades later, suggesting that perhaps Thompson will be safe. However, HBO's recent preview and new poster indicate that something dark is brewing on the series and no one, not even Thompson, is safe.

Boardwalk Empire returns to HBO for its fifth and final season Sunday, September 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
