Two action movies ruled the box office this week.

Will There Be A Black Widow Film For Scarlett Johansson?

One starred a massive, muscular former pro wrestler. The other starred a woman who is not quite the same athletic specimen. Nevertheless, on Sunday The Wrap reported that Scarlett Johansson's Lucy had the top weekend in America, besting Hercules, starring the erstwhile The Rock, Dwayne Johnson.

Lucy, written and directed by Luc Besson, stars Johansson as a woman who accidentally ingests a drug that gives her so much brainpower that she becomes essentially magic. The film made $44 million, which was more than expected, and which is Johansson's top opening as a lead. It also is apparently biggest openings for a female led R-rated action movie, but that's a factoid that was sliced and diced until it meant something. However, this is still an impressive showing for Lucy, and it really helps solidify Johansson as one of the foremost action actresses going today.

Dwayne Johnson Wraps On Fast And Furious 7

Hercules, the umpteenth movie about the Greek legend, and the second one to come out this year, made a solid $29 million. These two films knocked Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which had finished atop the box office for two straight weeks, down to third. This week also saw the limited release of A Most Wanted Man, one of the final movies made by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Lucy should not get used to being atop the box office, however. Next week, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy will be released, and it is likely to be one of the better box office showings of the summer.
