With this season set in the 1931, the prohibition drama has required some altered and even altogether new sets to bring this historic world of crime and deceit to life.

On Thursday evening the NY Daily News reported that the series had taken over Far Rockaway Beach in New York this week to film a flashback scene.

The drama had apparently filmed in Far Rockaway for a week back in June and returned Thursday. The scene is confirmed to be a flashback and based on the included photo, it seems that the program filmed an interaction between a young Nucky Thompson and tragic Jillian Darmody.

Creator Terence Winter noted in a recent behind-the-scenes interview (featured below) that flashbacks will be prevalent in the drama's upcoming season, showing the events of Nucky Thompson's (Steve Buscemi) past that have been the source of much discussion amongst the characters throughout the series.

HBO has filmed a number of scenes in the Far Rockaway area since the program first premiered on the network in September 2010. Poducer Martin Scorsese, who directed the pilot, originally wanted to film the series in Asbury Park, N.J. However, HBO had trouble working things out with the state and ultimately decided to move to New York.

Boardwalk Empire returns to HBO for a fifth and final season Sunday, September 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
