Damon Salvatore will return to The Vampire Diaries with a whole bunch of blood!

Ian Somerhalder, who plays the character, shared a photo from the CW set on Instagram Wednesday with the caption, "He's back! #DamonSalvatore."

In the photo, Somerhalder's face was smeared in fake blood and he let his vampire fangs show.

On the season 5 finale, Damon's life seemingly came to an end right after he and Elena Gilbert explained their true feelings for each other. Damon and Bonnie were then stuck on "The Other Side." However, it was revealed that both characters would return in the fall.

Executive producer Julie Plec explained how the Mystic Falls gang will deal with the loss of Bonnie and Damon.

"I think the most important thing I can say about season 6 is our characters fundamentally have to come to terms with the fact that Damon and Bonnie are gone forever, and have been doing so for quite some time when we return," she told Entertainment Weekly in May.

"Some are in denial, some are still searching for answers.'They've got to be somewhere. Where are they? We've got to rescue them.' Some have given up completely. Each individual character's reaction to the loss of these two people will be what informs the beginning of the sixth season."

Season 6 of The Vampire Diaries premieres on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 8/7c on The CW.
