Jeff Probst, the host of CBS's Survivor has revealed the reasoning behind ditching Redemption Island in favor of Exile Island for the upcoming season.

Jeremy & Val Collins Are Most 'Liked' Pair from Survivor Cast; Could Either Win?

Probst spoke with Entertainment Weekly on location in June, in a video posted Wednesday, revealing why the twist that worked so well in Survivor: Blood vs. Water would not be back for the second version of the family twist.

"We were going to do Redemption and we had been trying to come up with a new idea," Probst explained. "But we didn't have it, and so my feeling was, if we don't have a better idea, let's go with what we know works. And then another idea came to me and I ran it past the guys and suddenly it was 'yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. That's what we should do!' And then everybody contributed their two cents and we birthed what we're doing today."

Exile Island was left behind after Season 18's Tocantins, a twist that forces one or two players to go to a separate island for a day, away from everyone else. Usually there are clues to the Hidden Immunity Idol and sometimes the Idol itself.

For Survivor: San Juan del Sur, the upcoming season of the show, one set of loved ones will be randomly selected to compete against each other, with the loser being sent to Exile Island. The incentive to beat your loved one is that you'll win Reward for your tribe.

As seen in the video, it appears that married couple Jeremy and Val Collins are the first loved ones to face off for Reward this season.

Probst revealed in the video that there will be Idol clues on Exile Island but the Idol itself will be hidden at the two tribe camps.

The host noted that the gameplay on Survivor is "ratcheting up," so they are trying to make things as complicated as possible in order to succeed in the game.

He also said that Redemption Island is not officially done with for future seasons, despite a polarizing reception to the twist.

Survivor: San Juan del Sur premieres Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
