On Wednesday NBC News talked to the star about his new album Sundown Heaven Town and how it relates to his support of United States veterans.

"It's just a song about going somewhere that makes you feel good," he explained, "Being back to some stability and some anchor in your life. That's what home is."

McGraw knows what it's like to need a little extra help. Having struggled with substance abuse during his early years, it was his wife and fellow country artist Faith Hill who helped him through it. "I probably wouldn't have a life right now," he admitted, considering where he'd be without the love of his life. "I'd probably be gone I'm sure."

Now, McGraw is putting a little something together with Chase and Operation Homefront in order to give mortgage-free homes to veterans coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan.

While recipients will be selected based on their capabilities as homeowners, there are no other restrictions on the award. "It doesn't matter what side of the fence you call on, what your politics are," declared the singer.

The lives of 100 families have already been changed by this award. The grandson, nephew and brother of veterans, the experience of giving back has been something very close to home for McGraw.

"They don't think they deserve it," he explained to NBC. "The thing I'll try to tell them is that, 'You deserve everything good comes to you in life. And take this, and build a life with it.'"
