A new report speculates the inclusion of Thrain in the extended edition of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which is set to release soon.

The Battle of the Five Armies Is A "Psychological Thriller," Says Peter Jackson

TheOneRing states that the character was very crucial to the narrative of The Hobbot trilogy and his return in The Desolation of Smaug was somewhat inevitable, despite which he was left out. This spurred the website dedicated to The Hobbit series, to discuss the possibility of the mystery of Thrain -- is he dead or alive? -- being addressed in the extended edition of the film, so as to quell the curiousity of hardcore fans who were expecting more on the character and his contribution to the plot.

In another recent bit of news relating to the second film in the trilogy, Stephen Colbert dished on his experience filming for it in New Zealand.

As a guest on Seth Meyers's Late Night show, Stephen Colbert shared funny instance from his experience filming for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, in which he made a cameo. On the night of September 3, the political satirist came on Meyers's show and joked about how the fan boy in him terrified the cast and crew on the set of filming in New Zealand.

The funny newsman revealed thar director Peter Jackson had called him up and asked him to come down to New Zealand with his family and that they would figure getting him into the movie somehow. He spoke about his family being "the lake town spy family" in the movie, and how he was this spy who was tracking Bard the Bowman throughout Lake Town. He joked about how he was a "peak geek" at the time and might've "frightened them with his enthusiasm." Colbert went on to compare himself to his 12-year-old son at the Emmys, being all wide-eyed and going, "This is so much fun!"

The final film in the trilogy The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will hit theaters on December 18.
